At the end of his freshman year at the University of Kansas in 1942, he enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps. He took his flight training at several fields in Texas, where he became a P-47 pilot. In 1944, he was sent to Belgium with the 36th Fighter Group, 53rd Squadron. His assignments included the dive bombing of enemy facilities with a 500 pound bomb under each wing. This bombing cleared the way for Allied ground forces to advance into Germany.
