He Joined the Army Air Force Aviation Cadet Program to become a pilot and took basic training at Keesler field in Mississippi. The program was cancelled before graduation and he was transferred to Cisco, Texas to become a medic. Before shipping out to Italy, he was furloughed and resigned to become a B-24 tail gunner. Served in the Pacific.
