He served honorably from January 7, 1943 through December 6, 1945 as a Private First Class with the 843rd Engineering Aviation Battalion. He entered combat and the European Theatre at Omaha Beach three weeks after D-day. His unit built airfields and provided other combat engineering and logistical support, frequently under enemy fire, at such battles as St. Lo, St Marie Du Mon, Le Bougert, and Nancy/Rhiems. He participated in the Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland and Central Europe campaigns and received the European-African-Middle Eastern Ribbon with 4 Bronze Stars, Good Conduct and the WWII Victory Medal.
