Activity During WWII

At age 16 he tried to enlist in the United State Marine Corps but his attempt was thwarted by his mother. The following year his parents gave their consent. He completed boot camp and was sent to Camp Lejeune, for advanced combat training, and then to Philadelphia naval yard, as a member of the Guard Company. On his way home on Christmas leave, he had a near fatal fall from a train overpass and was transported to St. Albans Naval Hospital, where he received several surgeries over many months, including plastic surgery for extensive facial, ankle and back injuries. He was Honorably Discharged as a Private First Class.
