He was inducted into the Army February 3, 1941. He served with the 32nd Infantry Regiment of the 7th Division until he was sent to Officer Candidate School. He received his commission on September 21, 1942 and then served with the 123rd 2nd Battalion Headquarters and Anti-Tank Company during the New Guinea and Luzon Campaigns. He later was assigned to educational work with the Regiment.
