After the Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941 brought the United States into WWII, He interrupted his college studies to join the U.S. Army in November, 1943. During most of the war years he was stationed at Camp Lee, Virginia, where he received basic and branch training. He also participated in the Officer Candidate School at Camp Lee and was eventually promoted to the rank of second lieutenant. He also served at the Oakland Army Base in northern California and remained there until he received his honorable discharge in June, 1946 after nearly three years of active duty.
