He was inducted into the Army in Boston, Massachusetts on 26 March 1942. He completed 12 weeks of infantry school at Ft. Benning, Georgia, earning these military qualifications: expert gunner, sharpshooter rifle, sharpshooter carbine and combat infantryman. He also completed motor mechanic training. He served in the 206th Infantry’s Anti-Tank Company. Military Occupational Specialty: Automotive Mechanic. He served in the South Pacific Campaign and in the Ryukyus Campaign, the invasion of and battle for Okinawa. The battle for Okinawa was the last major battle of WWII, resulting in Japan’s surrender on 2 December 1945. He attained the rank of Sergeant during his service. He was awarded the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Campaign Ribbon, American Theater Campaign Ribbon and Victory Medal. He was honorably discharged on 11 December 1945 due to demobilization.
