Activity During WWII

Private First Class. Served with the 100th Infantry Division (Century Division), 399th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Battalion, Company F, in the European Theater of Operations. He was fighting near Bitsch, France, when a surprise German attack broke through the lines and a grenade landed in his foxhole, it blew up and knocked him unconscious. When he woke up, there were four German soldiers standing over him with guns and he was taken behind enemy lines as a Prisoner of War December 9, 1944. Later he learned that 90 percent of his platoon had been killed. From that time on, his unit was known as 'The Sons of Bitche'. He was imprisoned in several camps. As the Americans were getting near, the Germans just left, and many of the prisoners slipped out of the camp. The next day the 5th Armored Division poured into Tangermunde and liberated it. He then went to Camp Lucky Strike, which was set up for recovered allied military personnel.
