Rank: Sergeant. A member of the Illinois Army National Guard, who was inducted into Federal Service, June 28, 1941 at Fort Sheridan, Illinois. Deployed to the Philippine Islands, Southwest Pacific Theater of Operations, assigned to Able Company, 194th Tank Battalion a subordinate unit of the Provisional Tank Group. His unit participated in the Philippine Campaign, the conquest of the Philippine Islands by the Imperial Japanese Army and Naval Forces. While retreating to the Bataan Peninsula in the Battle of Bataan (Battle Dates: January 7-April 9, 1942) the Japanese forces captured him on the last day of the battle. His captors subjected him to participate in the Bataan Death March, incarcerated at the Prisoner of War Camp #502 Davao Mindanao Philippine Islands. Transported to Japan at an unknown date and held captive at the Prisoner of War Camp Chikko Osaka, later transferred to the Nagoya #11 B Prisoner of War Camp. This Soldier, an American Patriot, who so gallantly served his country, was a Prisoner of War for 40 months and 27 days, upon his liberation by Allied Forces September 5, 1945.
