Rank: Chief Cook. On October 21, 1942, he re-enlisted into the United States Marine Corps, later deployed to the Pacific Theater of Operations. Served as a Cook, assigned to Baker Company, 1st Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment a subordinate unit of the 1st Marine ‘The Old Breed’ Division. His division participated in the Battle of Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands against the Japanese Imperial Army and Navy forces (Battle Dates: Easter Sunday, April 1-June 22, 1945) Code Name: Operation Iceberg. Killed in action Saturday, June 23, 1945 and buried in the Island Command Cemetery on Okinawa. After the cessation of hostilities with Japan, his family received his remains for burial, with interment at the Saint Johns Cemetery in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. This Marine, an American Patriot, so gallantly gave his life for his country.
