He served in the Army during WWII. He was an engineer and had the skill of making maps from aerial photographs. For the first year or so of the war he was exempt from the draft since he was teaching this skill to others at Wayne University in Detroit. Then he went into the Army, to Officer Candidate School, and was commissioned. He served in New Guinea, the Philippine Islands, and was a member of the occupation forces in Japan after the war. He left the Army in 1946.
