He was commissioned as a lieutenant junior grade in the U.S. Navy. The Navy provided medical officers for the Marine Corps. From Camp Pendleton, California, he went to Hawaii to form the 4th Marine Division and was assigned to the 24th and 25th Marine Infantry Regiment. He was a participant in the action of Iwo Jima.
