Activity During WWII

At the beginning of WWII, he was called into active duty as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Army's First Cavalry Division and sent to Ft. Bliss. He then transferred to Ft. Clark where he shipped out to join the 112th Cavalry regiment in New Caledonia, South Pacific. Next, the regiment was sent to Townsville, Australia and trained for amphibious assault in New Guinea. He saw action in New Guinea and then he applied for and was accepted for pilot training and sent to Santa Anna, California, where his training as a pilot included learning radio and Morse code. He learned to fly the Corsair PT-ll, called the 'Maytag Messerschmitt'.
