He served in the 453rd Bomb Group, 733rd Bomb Squadron, 8th Army Air Force stationed at Old Buckenham Airfield in East Anglia from 1942-1944. He was the Radio Operator on a B-24 bomber (H-10-CF #42-64457) and was killed on March 6, 1944 in the first daylight bombing raid on Berlin. His plane was severely damaged by flak over Berlin and was hit again by Luftwaffe fighters on the return to England. The plane crashed in the English Channel off the English coast killing half the crew. His body was the only casualty recovered. He is buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
