He served as a flight officer and 2nd Lieutenant with the 599th Bombardment Squadron of the 9th Air Force. He flew on B-26 Marauders, until his plane the 'Draggin Lady No. 3' was lost with her crew of 9 during a sortie over Ediger-Eller, Germany on December 23rd, 1944 during the Battle of the Bulge and the liberation of occupied Europe.
