Left Norfolk, Virginia on 23 October 1942 for Operation Torch, the invasion of North Africa. 16 January 1943 assigned to the USS Dyson DD-572, a Fletcher class destroyer doing escort duty on the East Coast and Caribbean. 11 March 1944 assigned to the USS Brough DE-148, an Edsall class destroyer escort, Escorting shipping to European ports making 24 crossings. Rating of Seaman First Class.
