He was a non-commissioned Officer and Sergeant with the 41st Tank Battalion, 11th Armored Division in General Patton's 3rd Army. Earning the Purple Heart near Bastogne in the Battle of the Bulge, his unit also liberated the concentration camp at Mauthausen, and served in many campaigns during the liberation of Europe.
