Drafted into the U.S. Army on February 3, 1943, He served as a weather observer assigned to the Headquarters Battery, Ninth Division Artillery. His unit fought throughout Europe including the battles at Anzio Beach. After nearly two years in combat, he returned home and was awarded the Good Conduct Medal and the European-African-Middle Eastern Service Medal.
