A highly decorated transport pilot, he served in the pacific theater of operations flying 'The Hump' from India to China over the Himalaya mountains. From May 1944 to May 1945, he flew 72 round trips in a four engine C-87 cargo plane (a derivative of the B-24 Liberator bomber) carrying supplies to China.
