Enlisted in the U.S. Navy Seabees and served in the Pacific from 1942 to 1945. He began his service in the Aleutian Islands, later transferring to the 301st Naval Construction Battalion with service in Peleliu, Guam, Saipan, Tinian and Iwo Jima. He achieved the rank of Chief Boatswain's Mate (CBM) and received the Navy Good Conduct Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with 4 campaign stars, American Campaign Medal, WWII Victory Medal, and Navy Commendation Ribbon.
