He served as a Private First Class in WWII with the 100th Infantry Division (Century Division), 397th Infantry Regiment, Second Battalion, Company H, in the European Theater of Operations. He was a machine gunner and as his unit was fighting across Southern France, he was captured by the Germans during heavy combat activity. He was a Prisoner of War for six and a half months until the end of the war.
