Activity During WWII

Boot camp at Sampson, New York; Diesel School, Richmond, Virginia; plank owner of LST-779 built and launched at Neville Island, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Sailed from there down the Ohio to the Mississippi. Added mast and additional equipment to the superstructure at New Orleans. (It was purposely left off for bridge clearances.) Sailed from New Orleans through the Panama Canal to San Francisco, California. Departed the U.S. for Hawaii. Practiced amphibious landings in concert with other units in preparation for the invasion of Iwo Jima, February, 1945. Took part in the invasion of Okinawa later in 1945. After the end of the war, the 779 was in Sasebo, Japan as well as numerous Philippine islands transporting supplies as well as former Prisoners of War. He left LST-779 in early 1946 and returned to civilian life.
