Activity During WWII

Volunteered in the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1941. Received the Silver Star and Purple Heart while serving as Wing Commander on a bombardment mission on August 8, 1944. Shot down over Segrie Fontaine, France; captured, operated on with no anesthetic by French surgeons low on supplies, escaped, recaptured, saved by French underground just as he was about to be loaded on a train and taken to a prison camp. Help in private homes and churches until the end of the war.
