He joined the army on February 8, 1941 and was assigned to the 124th Infantry. He was transferred to the 124th Infantry and then to the 751st Military Police Battalion. He was commissioned on June 27, 1943 after attending Officers Candidate School. In the 123rd Infantry Regiment, 33rd Infantry Division, he became Communication Officer in Company B. In New Guinea he was Communications Officer of the First Battalion, serving in that capacity through New Guinea and Luzon Campaigns. He obtained the rank of Captain. Awards: Expert and Combat Infantryman Badges and the Bronze Star Medal.
