After two years of Reserve Officers Training Corps in College, where he took a pre-medical course, he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Engineers. Served with 3rd Amphibious Engineer Brigade and then transferred to 263rd Medical Battalion as they were in need of Medical Administration Officers. He then joined the 123rd Infantry Regiment, 33rd Infantry Division at Finschhafen and joined the 1st Battalion where he served during the New Guinea and Luzon Campaigns and as medical officer for the special task force operating at Dingalan Bay. Awards: Medical Combat Badge, Bronze Star Medal.
