He was the bombardier on B-17 #42-38019, part of the 369th Squadron of the 306th Bombardment Group. After his plane was shot down on April 11, 1944 on a mission over Germany, he was captured, interrogated, and then transported to the Stalag Luft I Prisoner of War camp in Barth where he remained until the camp was liberated 13 months later.
