He and 4 other tankers from the 754th Tank Battalion volunteered for a mission on 16-17 April 1945 on Mt Mataba, Philippine Islands in support of C Company, 63rd Infantry Regiment, 6th Infantry Division. 90 enlisted men and 2 officers of C Company were ordered to take the top at Nob 2 on 16 April. Enemy machine guns would be firing down on them. C Company followed the lone tank. The crew took the tank into treacherous mountain terrain. In pressing the attack on the enemy position the tank was constantly exposed to heavy automatic fire and hostile artillery fire. The tank knocked out 6 machine gun positions and many of the enemy. The tank crew saved the lives of many in Company C that day. All 5 tankers were awarded the Bronze Star.
