Served as a Ranger after completing Ranger school. Acquired a Belgian Sheppard named Winnie. Smuggled her aboard ship in his duffle bag and took her to Saipan and other invasions. When he was discharged 5 years later, she remained behind with the 1st division Marines to assist them until her discharge.
