Activity During WWII

Attempted to enlist in both the army and navy in 1941 after Pearl Harbor and rejected for health reasons. Joined the Merchant Marine and Coast Guard Temporary Reserves and served from 1942, continuing his service after WWII. Patrolled the Maine Coast daily and served on steamers and Liberty ships on 'shake down runs' to Halifax. Survived several U-Boat attacks off Nova Scotia. Credited with spotting U-853 in 1945 and helped rescue the crew of Eagle Boat 56 after it was sunk.
