Bronze Star and Purple Heart. He enlisted in the U.S. Army at Camp Shelby, Mississippi, on September 24, 1941, and was trained as an Infantryman. He deployed with Company H of the 28th Infantry Regiment to England in December 1943, and landed at Utah Beach in France on July 4, 1944. During WWII, he participated with his unit in the campaigns of Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, and Central Europe, and he was wounded in action on December 3, 1944, in Germany. He returned to the United States in March 1945, and received an honorable discharge from the U.S. Army on February 22, 1946.
