Proudly served in the U.S. Army during WWII as a tank operator in six battle campaigns under General George S. Patton, Jr. and as a result, traveled to North Africa, Italy and the European Theatre of Operations. He also served in the occupation forces, working with displaced personnel and German SS prisoner of war rehabilitation. He was able to learn and communicate in German during this time. He received many ribbons, medals and awards, including the Silver Star.
