He was drafted and served in the U.S. Army from December 22, 1942 to May 28, 1946. He served in the military police unit at Fort Crockett, Texas. He completed officer training at Grinnell College in Grinnell, Iowa, and became a second Lieutenant, assigned to the Seventh Service Command Headquarters in Omaha, Nebraska, rising to the rank of major. He later served in the Army Reserve.
