He enlisted in the Navy in 1942 at age 17 and saw action on the USS Franklin (The Ship That Wouldn't Die), and survived several bombing attacks. He received the WWII Victory Medal, Asiatic–Pacific Campaign Medal with 4 stars, Good Conduct, and Philippine Liberation with one star.
