Enlisted at age 17. Aerial gunners' school in Oklahoma. Served from 1944 to 1946 aboard the USS Hornet (CV-12). Flew 204 combat missions as the rear gunner on a an Avenger dive bomber. Fought in the Philippines, Taiwan, the China Sea, Iwo Jima and the home islands of Japan. He was awarded the combat ACTION ribbon, Air medal over 25 times and WAS recommended for a Silver Star.
