In the Pacific during WWII, having enlisted in January of 1945 at the age of 17, he served upon a Destroyer as a part of the 'Tin Can Navy'. He earned the American Campaign Medal and WWII Victory Medal. He served with distinction as a Seaman First Class aboard the USS Charles P. Cecil (DD-835), including operating as part of Joint Task Force One in the atomic bomb tests at Bikini Atoll, as well as supporting occupation forces with operations in Japanese waters.
