He enlisted in the Army Air Corps Reserve at 17, and was called up for pilot training on the 29th of January, 1945. He served and trained at Camp Beale, California; he spent 4 months in basic training, 2 months assigned as an Aerial Gunner, and 8 months assigned as a Personal Affairs Consultant. His military education took place at Fort Myers, Florida, for Arial Gunnery for 12 weeks, where he received instruction in ballistics, operation of turret mechanisms, stripping and assembly of 50 caliber machine guns, etc. He also received instruction at the Army Air Force Personal Affairs School at in New York City for 4 weeks. The war ended before he could officially engage in the fighting as an Aerial Gunner, and he was honorably discharged on 22 August 1946.
