He was a member of the 515th Bomber Squadron, 376th Bombardment Group in WWII. He flew as a Radioman on the B-24 Liberator 'Dopey Goldberg' tail 88 during the bombing of Ploesti Romania oil fields on 1 August 1943. On 16 August 1943, he was shot down while performing duties on the B 24 'Teggie Ann' tail 100 while bombing Foggia, Italy. He was a Prisoner of War until the end of the war in STALAG XVIIB in Krems, Austria. He earned the Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal (5 Oak Leaf Clusters), European-African-Middle Eastern Medal with 4 battle stars, 2 Distinguished Unit Citations, Good Conduct Medal, Prisoner of War Medal and the WWII Victory Medal.
