Enlisted as a Private in the U.S. Army on 23 January 1943. In August 1943, he graduated from the B-24 Liberator Airplane Mechanics School at Keesler Field near Biloxi, Mississippi. Subsequently assigned as a B-29 Superfortress Airplane Mechanic/Aerial Gunner, 20th Air Force, 73rd Bomb Wing, 497th Bomb Group (VH), 871st Bomb Squadron, Isley Airfield, Saipan, Mariana Islands.
