Worked in the South Portland shipyard building Liberty ships. He built and maintained the boilers and drive equipment. He also maintained steam, oxygen and acetylene distribution lines. Later he joined the Merchant Marine and served aboard the Liberty ships Edward N. Hurley and George S. Bibb and convoyed to Russia and France.
