He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1939 completing his basic training at the Great Lakes Training Center, Illinois. He was part of Combat Wing 2, servicing PBY’s (flying boats/seaplanes). He was assigned to a seaplane tender, the USS Swan, out of Pearl Harbor until 1941. He was transferred to the USS McFarland. He went to deep sea diving school in Washington, D.C.
