He served as a Private First Class in WWII with the 100th Infantry Division (Century Division), 398th Infantry Regiment, Third Battalion, Company L, in the European Theater of Operations. He died of wounds in France and was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart Medal and Silver Star Medal for Gallantry in Action; Bitche, France.
