He left his studies from Virginia Polytechnic Institute on 1 April 1944 and joined the U.S. Army Air Force. He became a bombardier on a B-17 in the 18th Bomber Squadron, 34th Bomb Group, 8th Air Force. He flew 30 missions over Europe. On one mission his plane was losing fuel and would not make it back to England. So they flew east to Russian occupied territory. Next day refueled and flew back to England.
