She joined the Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service in 1942 but was not permitted to be on active duty until 1943 when she turned twenty years of age. She was a seaman 2nd class. She was trained in New York City, New York and in Oklahoma and then spent the war in Washington, D.C. in the Bureau of Ships in communications and coding departments. Due to the classified materials she handled, she was escorted on the night shifts to and from work by the Shore Patrol.
