He enlisted into the U.S. Army on September 16, 1940 and was discharged on August 8, 1945. He did his basic training in Ft. Dix, New Jersey. He was stationed there for two years. He traveled to South and North Carolina for maneuvers and was on the way back to Ft. Dix, New Jersey from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania when he heard the news about the Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbor. He was involved with purchasing supplies. He was a Corporal in the Quartermaster Corps; He was immediately in a convoy transferring to Whitehorse, Canada, borderline to Alaska for nineteen months building the Alcan Highway with the 44th Infantry Division and the 141st Quartermaster Trucking Company. The units completed 1500 miles. In February, 1944 his unit was shipped to England. His trucking unit spent four months helping the English clean up from the German bombings. In June, 1944, his trucks were transported on landing crafts to aid in the invasion of Normandy. They eventually landed at Saint-Lô, France and drove north to Cherbourg to protect the largest port in northern France. His unit supplied the infantry from Cherbourg down to Marseilles while the allied troops were chasing the German troops. After France they followed the troops to Leige, Belgium after the Germans had been run out. On the way home in August, 1945 He traveled by train from Germany to Marseilles, Paris; flew to Casa Blanca, Africa, Brazil, Puerto Rico, and then to Miami, and Finally by train to Ft. Dix, New Jersey to get discharged. He received many medals and citations.
