She graduated from Mary Washington College in May, 1943. She enlisted in the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps on August 3, 1943 in Albany, New York for the duration of the war. She completed boot camp training at Ft. Oglethorpe, Georgia. On August 23, 1943 she had to be sworn in again as the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps became the Women's Army Corps. The basic administration school was in Nachogdoches, Texas; she went to San Antonio, Texas, an Ordnance Base as her first assignment. She completed the Advanced Administration School, San Antonio, Ft. Sam Houston, Texas. She was then transferred to Flora, Mississippi, outside of Jackson, Mississippi at the Ordnance Plant. She was a personnel clerk working with records. She went in as a Private First Class and was finally promoted to a Technical Sergeant 4th grade. When the base at Flora was declared surplus in 1945, she chose to go to Camp Kilmer, Piscataway Township, New Jersey as it was closer to her home. The war ended and was discharged on February 6, 1946. She received the following medals: American Service Medal, WWII Victory Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps Service Medal.
