Activity During WWII

At age eighteen in 1943, he headed for boot camp in Sampson, Seneca County, New York for six weeks. He was then was transferred to Memphis, Tennessee for aviation school and on to gunnery school in Melbourne, Florida. Then he transferred to Santa Rosa, California, north of San Francisco. The ship transported the 4th Marines to Pacific Islands to fight the Japanese. The flights off the ships protected the Marines and then picked them up and brought them back. He served from September 14, 1943 to April 30, 1945; his rank was Petty Officer 3rd Class. The commendations and medals he received were the WWII Victory Medal, American Campaign Medal, American Defense Service Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal and the Marine Corps Combat Aircrew Badge.
