He enlisted in the U.S. Army on December 8, 1942, at San Francisco, California and was assigned to active duty on December 15, 1942. He served with the 459th Engineer Depot Company. On September 4, 1943 he went overseas, where he saw battle in Normandy, Central Europe, Northern France, Ardennes (Battle of the Bulge) and the Rhineland. He had a rating of Staff Sergeant and received an honorable discharge on October 29, 1945.
