Drafted, Served March 3, 1945 to August 16, 1946. Ranks: Apprentice Seaman (entry level); Seaman 2nd class (boot camp); Fireman 1st class (at graduation from boot camp); Motor Machinist 3rd class (in China, and his discharge rank). Left from Ashland on a bus to Cleveland, train to Great Lakes, March 3, 1945; San Mateo, San Bruno base, south of San Francisco; San Diego; San Mateo, San Bruno base; Treasure Island; Pearl Harbor for one week, then traveled to the Philipine Islands and China on the USS Golden City; Tsingtao, China (traveled back on USS General Butner) while in China, stationed on USS Jason; San Diego; Home. In boot camp, scored 149 out of 150 in 22 caliber rifle competition, one of only three to do so.
