He flew 65 missions as a radio-gunner aboard a B-26 Marauder bomber named 'Hangover Hut'. He was awarded the Air Medal, twelve Oak Leaf Clusters, and European Theatre of Operations ribbon with four stars. He participated in the invasion of Normandy on D-Day, June 6, 1944.
