After graduating from the University of Oklahoma, he joined the Army prior to the beginning of WWII. Initially stationed in Virginia as a 2nd Lieutenant, he rose to Lieutenant Colonel in the 3rd Army and figured strategically in the planning and execution of Patton's many campaigns, in particular, the eventual relief of Bastogne on Christmas Day, 1944.
